Sorbus Aucuparia (Rowan, Mountain Ash)
A small native tree with prolific red berries, superb autumn colours and white flowers that appear in May/June. Rowan is a very adaptable pioneer plant for areas such as waste lands, and tolerates a wide variety of soils, including extreme acidity. This tree is resistant to snow pressure, and in some cases is even used as an avalanche barrier.
Fruit: The fruit are round and mature from yellow to orange and finally scarlet.
Timber: The timber is dense hard and pale, it can be used for turnery and carving and also firewood.
Soil Types / Habitat: It tolerates a wide range of soils. It prefers acidic soils best and well drained. Avoid high pH levels. They do not grow well in dense shade. It prefers cold climates best.
