Quercus Robur (English Oak)

The English oak is the national tree of England, representing strength and endurance. This large, deciduous tree grows up to 20-40 metres tall and can live for hundreds of years. Its evenly lobed leaves grow in bunches and have little to no stem. It forms a large open rounded canopy which allows light to the ground, enabling flora and fauna to grow underneath. The English oak has a strong root system, great for holding soil on sliding slopes and river banks. It is tolerant of flooding, making a good defence in flood prone areas, even by coast lines. All in all, a very hardy tree, which produces spectacular autumn colours and is invaluable to wildlife, most of which rely on its acorns as an important food source. On good sites, English oak produces straight boles and valuable timber. It also makes a beautiful solitary tree.

Fruit: The acorns have shallow cups and ripen from green to brown.

Timber: The timber is strong and heavy. It can be used for furniture, fencing, gates etc.

Soil Types/Habitat: It tolerates most soil except light dry soil. Mature trees tolerate flooding even by sea-water. They are found in most woodlands up and down the country.
