Prunus Avium (Wild Cherry)

This medium sized tree makes one of the most attractive timber trees. Growing up to 30 metres tall with a short think set trunk and a large rounded canopy. Its leaves are a long oval shape with a pointed tip and finely toothed edges. During the spring, the wild cherry puts on a spectacular show of large white flowers, which turn into deep red cherries once pollinated. This beautiful tree is valued by wildlife and humans alike, with its fruits and foliage providing a food source for small mammals and birds and its timber used for firewood and decorative furniture. The wild cherry tree is also frequently used as an ornamental tree for parklands and large gardens.

Fruit: The fruit is rounded and shiny, growing on a dark brown stalk in clusters and bright red in colour. The fruit is edible and sweet tasting when ripe.

Timber: The timber is golden brown, heavy and tough and can be used for furniture and turned articles. It makes good firewood and gives a smell of blossom when burning.

Soil Types/Habitat: It will grow in most soils but prefers heavy soil which is either neutral or alkaline. Often the wild cherry is found in woodlands and hedgerows.
