Populus Tremula (Aspen)
This medium-sized tree is best known for its shimmering foliage which trembles in the slightest of breeze (hence the name ‘tremula’) and creates a distinct rustling noise. This characteristic makes aspen very useful against noise pollution, as the sound of the trembling leaves distracts from any unwanted noise. The leaves are large and round, with a blunted toothed edge and turn to a mixture of rich yellows and reds in the autumn. One of the hardiest of all the poplars, being able to withstand unfavourable climates, particularly in moist soils.
Fruit: Female catkins open when ripe to release lots of white cotton-like hairs which carry the seeds.
Timber: The timber is soft and light white in colour. It is excellent for making matches and paper pulp.
Soil Types/Habitat: It is able to tolerate a wide variety of soil types and habitats. Avoid planting in dry areas.
