Castanea Sativa (Sweet Chestnut)
This large, hardy yet majestic tree is most famously known for its fruits, the Sweet Chestnut, which we typically enjoy as a tasty treat at Christmas time. The sweet chestnut tree has a long life span, with some trees known to date back as far as the 12th century. Generally, the sweet chestnut grows up to 35meters in height, bearing oblong, toothed leaves formed into a tall, heavily branched, upright crown. A very versatile tree, used for ornamental purposes, creating leafy green avenues as well as the timber being used as a cheaper alternative to oak.
Fruit: The nuts are used in cooking and for fattening livestock.
Timber: The timber can be used to make beams and panelling. In the Mediterranean, the wood is highly favoured for furniture making.
Soil Types/Habitat: Grows best in a mild climate with adequate moisture.
