Betula Pendula (Silver Birch)
Known as the ‘Lady of the Woods’ for its graceful and elegant appearance, the silver birch is possibly one of the UK’s most recognisable trees. Its distinctive white peeling bark with emerald green triangular shaped leaves, formed in a slightly weeping habit, make a beautiful tree. As well as being attractive, the silver birch is also important for its high environmental and wildlife value. It provides food and shelter to many vertebrates and invertebrates, and acting as a pioneer species, it is able to help extend wooded areas into what would otherwise be barren land. This medium sized, extremely hardy tree is favoured for native planting schemes and should certainly not be overlooked.
Fruit: Catkins swell and split to release very small, winged seeds.
Timber: The timber is not very strong. It is used for firewood, paper pulp, brooms, horse jumps and fence posts.
Soil Types/Habitat: Can tolerate most soil and habitat conditions, however, grows best in dry and sandy soils where there is plenty of light available. Does not tolerate shaded areas.
