Acer Pseudoplatanus (Sycamore)
This large, deciduous, broadleaved tree is one of the UK’s most reliable hardwood timber trees and whether considered a native or not, the value of the sycamore tree must not be underestimated. Fast growing, tough and pollution resistant the sycamore tree provides refuge to wildlife in landscapes where very few other tree species can survive. For example, sycamore is very useful as a windbreak in coastal areas, as it can tolerate the salt-air.
Fruit: The winged fruit are roughly 3cm long. They appear in bunches which break up in the autumn. The seeds begin to germinate as soon as they hit the ground, which is why some may consider the sycamore tree to be a weed.
Timber: The hard timber can be used to make flooring and musical instruments. Particularly useful for furniture and kitchenware.
Soil Types/Habitat: Grows well in a variety of soil types and tolerates high pH levels. Can be planted in cold exposed sites as well as by the sea.
