Acer Campestre (Field Maple)
Native to England, the Field Maple is a small to medium sized deciduous tree which can grow up to 15-20 metres. The five-lobed leaves are a bright green, turning to an impressive mixture of yellows, reds and golden browns in the autumn. Its dense root system makes the Field Maple suitable to be planted on a wide variety of soil types. Its rounded habit makes an excellent home of nesting birds. It is also frost and pollution resistant.
Timber: A very versatile tree, which can also be found in hedgerows up and down the UK. In the Middle Ages, the timber was used to produce musical instruments, now the wood is used for turning and craft work. Also makes satisfactory firewood.
Soil Types/Habitat: Grows best in rich well drained soil but is equally at home in any soil type.
