Rosa Canina (Dog Rose)
Dog rose is a large native rose which displays a rambling habit due to its masses of tangled stems which are lined with vicious thorns, it is this feature which makes dog rose ideal for creating an impenetrable barrier. During the spring and summer months, this thick thorny shrub is dotted with delicate pink or white scented flowers turning to red oval shaped hips around September-October time. Most commonly found along farm hedgerows and scrubland. Its flowers and fruits are a great source of nectar and food for insects and birds.
Fruit: It produces glossy, red, egg-shaped hips in the autumn.
Timber: N/A
Soil Types/ Habitat: It can tolerate most soil types but prefers sandy soils. It will grow in most sites and situations. Perfect for thickening a mixed hedgerow.
